Dubai-based Emirates is a known world-class airline which caters to the needs of its international passengers with in-flight entertainment and world-class cuisine. The airline which is one of the most revered airline in the world, has just caused a fury after its latest announcement. On July 3, the carrier broke many hearts after it said that it will no longer serve ‘Hindu meal’ on its in-flight menu.

This announcement from the largest airline carrier in the Middle East came as a shock, after its decision to discontinue ‘Hindu meal’ services.

This shocker came in the form of an official statement issued by Emirates, which made this decision in lieu of reviews of the on-board products and customer feedback.

What is this ‘Hindu meal‘ exactly, which has been discontinued by the way?

‘Hindu meal’ have always been an option as a type of ‘request meals’ which many international carriers like to offer to long-distance flyers. Passengers can book these meals as per their religious and medical needs.

Emirates, which provided ‘Hindu meal’ earlier, is offering a number of other meal options such as Vegetarian Jain Meal, Indian Vegetarian Meal, Kosher meal and Non-Beef non-vegetarian options.

For its vegetarian flyers, the airline serves Indian Vegetarian Meal (AVML) which consists of  all types of vegetables, however, it does not contain any type of meat or dairy products.

Emirates also caters to the Jain community by offering Vegetarian Jain meal (VJML). It includes fresh fruit and stem vegetables (grown above ground). However, this doesn’t consist of any root vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, etc.

This is the airlines’ official statement which reads:

“As part of our continuous review of the products and services available to customers, Emirates can confirm that it will discontinue the Hindu meal option. We constantly review our offering, taking into consideration customer uptake and feedback. This helps us improve service efficiencies.”

The airline’s spokesperson further added:

“Food and drink form an integral part of any Emirates flight experience and our menus are created by leading chefs to reflect the culture and preferences of Emirates’ diverse customer base. We have a wide variety of special meals that can be ordered in advance to cater to our customers with medical or religious dietary requirements, including our Hindu customers.”

For the unknown, ‘Hindu meal’ option on airlines menu means no beef, but includes Lamb, Pork, Chicken or vegetarian food. This decision has caused severe Twitter‘s reactions, with hashtags like #Don’tflyEmirates etc. Have a look:
