Meet Hayat Ullah, A Muslim Who Earned The Title Of Chaturvedi For His Knowledge Of Sanskrit

Popularly known as the “Muslim soldier of Sanskrit”, Hayat Ullah is a Muslim who is proficient in Sanskrit and has earned the title of “Chaturvedi”. Hence, his complete name is Hayat Ullah Chaturvedi. A teacher by profession, Hayat Ullah is a 75-year-old man who is still dedicated to spreading knowledge about Sanskrit.

Fond of Sanskrit language since childhood, Hayat Ullah was born in a Muslim family but did not let his religion come in the way of his journey of knowledge. For him, unity and integrity of the country are much more important than religion and is thus, a great inspiration for teachers and society. A resident of Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, Hayat Ullah has retired as a teacher but his love for spreading knowledge still keeps him inspired to teach. He believes that the power of language makes the wall of religion fall, which is the fundamental need of today’s time.

Hayat Ullah has complete knowledge of all the four Vedas and was accorded with the title of “Chaturvedi” in the year 1967 at a national convention. He taught Sanskrit at MR Sherwani Inter College and retired in 2003. Even after retirement, he continued teaching Sanskrit in Mehgaon Inter College. He has also authored a number of books in Sanskrit and conducted seminars to promote Sanskrit in countries like America, Mauritius, and Nepal.

Many of his students are now Sanskrit teachers and respect him immensely. These students say that they are proud of the fact that they have attained knowledge of Sanskrit from a great man like Hayat Ullah.
